The Optical Delay Line is the first opto-mechanical device in the European XFEL facility to integrate 4 moveable mirrors to generate a fix delay in the photon path. It is also an innovative research project because in the vacuum chamber the photons and electron beam travel together with a lateral displacement generated by electromagnets and controlled by Silicon mirrors.
A magnetic chicane consisting of 4 dipole magnets and a special vacuum chamber has been installed in SASE3. These elements allow the generation of two different X-ray pulses with different wavelengths. The first set of undulator create the X-ray pulse with wavelength λ1 and the magnetic chicane delays the electron beam in order to allow the second set of undulators to create the second X-ray pulse with wavelength λ2. The ODL is design to be installed on the middle of this magnetic chicane and will enable to scan through positive and negative delays between the two wavelengths λ1 and λ2. This process can only be done with this device. The device itself thus becomes the subject of European XFEL’s research. Through the development of this device, specific expertise can be gained and it could be exploited in future projects like the Soft X-ray self-seeding and optical delay lines based on mirrors for the Hard X-ray beamlines.
For finding companies with prooven expertize a market survey has been performed. As a result of the market survey 5 companies were selected and received the tender documents.
