Debusine
Debusine is a project aimed at modernizing Debian's infrastructure and streamlining workflows for contributors. It is a general-purpose software factory tailored to the needs of Debian-based distributions, bringing together an artifact storage system, a task scheduler, and a workflow management system. The project is led by Freexian, an organization with extensive experience in the Debian community.
debusine is a project aimed at modernizing Debian's infrastructure and streamlining workflows for contributors. It is a general-purpose software factory tailored to the needs of Debian-based distributions, bringing together an artifact storage system, a task scheduler, and a workflow management system. The project is led by Freexian, an organization with extensive experience in the Debian community.
Debian is a largely successful Linux distribution that is maintained by a large number of highly skilled volunteers and relied upon by many companies, organizations, state entities, and government bodies. While reliance on it has increased, the experience of contributing to Debian has become worse over the years. If Debian cannot attract or mantain its community of highly skilled volunteers, then its quality, security, and sustainability would decline. All these organisations and people that rely on Debian or Debian derivative distributions would have to spend a lot of money and time, and it would be a terrible loss for the FOSS ecosystem and the public interest.
To avoid this scenario, Freexian is proposing to modernize Debian's core infrastructure by investing in the debusine project. This particular request for support is focused on implementing a few key improvements to debusine, including the ability to run Quality Assurance (QA) tasks, automatic scheduling of QA tasks, and replacing Debian's aging build daemon network. By investing in debusine, STF is making a contribution to the sustainability, security and maintainability of a critical Linux distribution that’s widely deployed as infrastructure. This would help STF achieve its mission of strengthening the FOSS ecosystem.
The project is divided into 5 milestones:
- Milestone 1: Debusine can be used to run various Quality Assurance (QA) tasks (3 months)
- Milestone 2: Debusine can automatically schedule QA tasks (4.5 months)
- Milestone 2: Debusine can automatically schedule QA tasks (4.5 months)
- Milestone 4: The Debian security team can rely on debusine for their work (3 months)
- Milestone 5: Debian developers can schedule their own archive-wide tests/experiments without disrupting regular day-to-day work (3.5 months)
