Beschreibung: As a research and development service, the contract is excluded from the scope of public procurement law (cf. § 116(1)(2) GWB). Rustls is an open source library that implements the TLS protocol and provides support for QUIC protocol implementations. Internet Security Research Group (ISRG)’s Prossimo project has invested in developing Rustls over the last three years and today it’s highly performant and memory safe. This project in 2025 will move Rustls adoption forward by lowering the effort required to switch from other TLS implementations, along with continuing to improve Rustls so its performance and functionality can be even stronger selling points.

Titel: Rustls-Project
Beschreibung: Rustls is an open source library that implements the TLS protocol and provides support for QUIC protocol implementations. Internet Security Research Group (ISRG)’s Prossimo project has invested in developing Rustls over the last three years and today it’s highly performant and memory safe. Our work in 2025 will move Rustls adoption forward by lowering the effort required to switch from other TLS implementations, along with continuing to improve Rustls so its performance and functionality can be even stronger selling points. TLS is the most ubiquitous protocol for encrypting traffic on the Internet and internal networks—billions of phones, computers, servers, IoT devices, and embedded systems rely on TLS to securely communicate over networks. OpenSSL, the most widely-used TLS library today, has a long history of memory safety vulnerabilities because it is written in C, which is not a memory safe language. Moving a significant portion of connections from OpenSSL to the memory safe Rustls TLS library is critical to increasing the security of Internet users because it will eliminate vulnerabilities that lead to security breaches and data leaks that can cause personal and financial harm to the public, result in the mass denial of essential public services, and threaten basic human rights and safety. Our aim is for Rustls to be used across the Internet to improve security for any person or organization using TLS, which today is nearly everyone, including individuals, companies of all sizes, governments, and NGOs.
