Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial – Auchonvillers, France
Projects along the First World War’s Western Front are very different than forestry projects in Canada. Even 100 years later, the French and Belgian soil
continues to turn up dangerous remnants and important artefacts from the First World War. Buried shells and mortars are particularly dangerous as many failed
to explode on impact and remain live. Careful planning and strict protocols are necessary to ensure safe handling of these materials. Over the next 5 years,
European Operations will undertake several forestry projects at the Canadian national Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial
requiring prior clearance to ensure the protection of personnel and suppliers. Identification and safe removal of unexploded ordonnances still located underground and in areas where digging will need to take place for tree planting given the history of the sites. The project consists of providing a clean-up team to detect and uncover units between 0 and 100 cm deep, as well as securing ammunition.
